The potter’s village Mantamados
with the monastery Taxiarchis
is a popular and impressing site of pilgrimage. Another 10km
towards Mythilene lies the summer village Ag. Stefano. Although
there is a beautiful footpath between Mantamados and Ag. Stefano,
hardly anyone still knows about it. From the headland of Ag.
Stefano the potter’s workshops and kilns can be
reached via a tarred road. Hidden inside an olive grove lies
the picturesque, old Byzantine Church Ag. Stefano, a holy and
healing place of serenity and piety.
On the drive to Mythilene,
the island’s capital, you should not miss out on making
a detour to the monastery Ag.
Rafail. In spite of being an only 40-year-old building,
it is visited by thousands of Greeks from Greece and abroad
hoping for miracle curings which are said to have occurred
there numerous times according to the records of the abbess
Eugenia.
