…the “Wild West” of Lesvos! About 20 million
years ago this region was covered with enormous forests of giant
redwood trees, cinnamon and pine trees once buried by volcanic
ashes and after a process of sintering for millennia can admired
as a “petrified forest”.
Since 2001 there is a fantastic museum in Sigri.
Furthermore, Sigri is an original harbour village with beautiful
beaches, especially Faneromeni, the northern beach.
When travelling to Lesvos, you shouldn’t miss visiting
Skala Eressou, where the
poet, dancer and musician Sappho was born 2600 years ago,
who was referred to as the 10th muse by Plato. After returning
from her exile in Sicily she founded a “higher school
of daughters” in Mythilene. Sappho's poetry, devoted
to the goddess of love Aphrodite, her verses of love, longing,
bliss, separation and death were most probably dedicated to
her students as well. From May until October Skala Eressos
is a colourful harbour village with one of the most beautiful
sandy beaches of Lesvos, a picturesque sunset… a place
that has a space for each and everyone.
