Mythilene, the island’s
capital, is a pulsating place of life somewhere between lively
and noisy. It’s colourful Agora (market square), the
market stands, clothing and household stores, banks, the great
domed church of Saint Therapon (St. Therapist); the cafés
at the sea front and the recently beautifully restored “Turkish
district”, and the exceptional archaeological museums
make a visit to the city unforgettable.
To the east, in Moria, a large roman
aqueduct, and 5km south towards the airport the famous
Teriade museum for modern
art can be visited. Miro, Picasso, Matisse, Chagall - a collection
of originals one might expect in Paris or New York are displayed
here inside a mansion located in an olive grove. Works of
the naïve folk painter Theophilos can be found in separate
rooms of the museum as well.
