The mountain village of Vafios
can be reached via a tarred road as well as by an old “monopathi”
which used to be the connection between Petra and Vafios in
former times. It is well worth a hike up there during the afternoon
in order to enjoy the sunset while having a delicious dinner
in one of Vafios’ taverns.
An old Roman road is
leading past the camping area up to the altitude of Vafios
and Argenos. After leaving behind the “modern times”,
breathtaking views of the landscape and sometimes even remnants
of ancient water pipes are revealed.
A boat trip to Skala Sykameneas,
the picturesque harbour village with its probably most unusual
form of adoration of the Virgin Mary known, the “Virgin
Mary with the mermaid’s tail”. Poet Stratis Myrivilis
wrote the novel “The Mermaid Madonna” sitting
underneath the mulberry tree of the tavern “I Sykamenea”.
We can recommend following a walkway along the coast from
Mithymna to Skala Sykameneas (approx. 12km). About two hours
along the trail the little restaurant “Paradiso”
invites you to enjoy great regional meals.
