Lesvos is a great island for trekking, though lacking the trail
signs and maps we are generally used to. We can recommend hiking
to Petra, the neighbouring
village which has a chapel on a rock, a fact probably responsible
for the town’s name. Worth seeing is the church of the
“Madonna with the sweet kiss” as well as the Lesvos’
oldest Byzantine church, Ag. Nikolaos. Taking a cooling swim
in the sea at a sandy beach is great after the journey, while
having dinner at Eleni’s restaurant of the women’s
cooperative on the platia is an absolute “must”.
On a plateau in the mountains of Petra lies the sanctuary
of Saint Alexandros with
remnants of the first monastery of Lesvos, dating back to
the 4th century A.D. The very impressive and natural arrangements
indicate that it might have been an ancient place of power.
Likewise in the mountains and a little east of Petra lies
the Valley of the Mills,
an enchanted loop road leading to Petri where you can enjoy
fantastic homemade foods with a gorgeous view of Petra and
the sea.
